A few weeks ago I mentioned the new 401k, IRA and Roth IRA limits for 2018. In 2021 401(k)’s got a $500 a year bump up to $19,500/year, but Roth IRAs and IRAs held steady with a limit of $6,000 a year combined. Figuring out which account to use can be tricky, but in this post, I’m going to highlight what I think will pay off the most for you in the long run.

Learning to invest isn’t something you can condense into a blog post. It requires broad knowledge on a dozen different topics ranging from financial independence to how markets fluctuate to stocks vs bonds, index funds, diversification, Vanguard vs other brokerages, how to choose what to invest in and dozens of other topics. JL Collins explored these topics in his very popular Stock Series, which spans 31 articles (!).

At the end of every quarter, I share a snapshot of my current finances. This includes what I’m invested in, their values and the change over time. The hope of sharing this information is to show it’s possible to make money investing in super-simple ways without the need to watch the latest news.
My hope is that people realize how easy it is to invest and take control of their own finances. Whether that’s reading a book on the topic, taking my free investing course, or looking at what others are doing and learning from that. When I learned to invest it was a combination of all of these, and I always wished more people shared the nitty-gritty of their own decision making. I hope this helps to highlight what I’m investing in, and get feedback from those more experienced than myself about ways I could improve.

One tradition that we’ve kept alive at Code School for years is storytime. The idea of it is simple. When a group of 4-8 of us are together someone starts things off by asking a question. Then, we go around the group each taking the time to answer it with a story. We’ve shared stories many times – over cocktails at bars, while at developer conferences, in hot tubs at company retreats and around fires on the beach.
